Biblical Principles for the Management of Money
The teachings of Jesus in Matthew 17:24-27 and Matthew 22:15-22 show that Christians should respect lawful authority and fulfill their civic responsibilities, including paying taxes. Jesus demonstrated that believers can honor God while also respecting government structures. In Matthew 6:24-27, Jesus warns that no one can serve both God and money. Wealth should never become an idol because God must always come first in our lives. In Matthew 25:14-30, the Parable of the Talents teaches faithful stewardship. God entrusts resources to His people and expects them to use them wisely, responsibly, and productively for His glory.
The Africa Study Bible article “Money and Possessions – God’s Wealth in Our Hands” emphasizes that everything belongs to God and that Christians are merely stewards of His resources. This means that money should be managed with honesty, generosity, accountability, and wisdom. Christians are called to live by the Spirit rather than by the desires of the flesh. Living by the Spirit means avoiding greed, selfishness, corruption, and the love of money. Instead, believers should practice contentment, integrity, generosity, and responsible financial management.
Unfortunately, these biblical principles are often misused. One example is when some church leaders misuse church funds for personal enrichment while neglecting the needs of the congregation. This damages the reputation of the church and causes people to lose trust in Christian leadership. Another example is corruption in government, where public funds intended to help communities are stolen for personal gain. The result is poverty, inequality, and suffering among citizens.
These examples remind us that money is a tool entrusted to us by God. When managed according to biblical principles, it can bless others and advance God’s kingdom. When controlled by selfish desires, it leads to harm and dishonors God. Christians must therefore seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all financial decisions and remain faithful stewards of God’s resources.
